What we do

The British Medical Association (BMA) has been supporting medical research since 1839 and we are the oldest medical organisation in the world to award grants and prizes to encourage and further medical research.

The BMA Foundation for Medical Research is a not for profit funding body that awards up to £650,000 in grants for medical research each year. Today the Foundation helps to fund innovative medical research in a variety of areas from the elimination of the common cold to heart disease and cancer as well as many other research areas. The grants are awarded to medical doctors and research scientists. For many the grants are key to supporting their career development and contributing to advances in medicine and patient care.

Where does the grant funding come from?

The BMA Foundation and all its grants are solely funded by legacies and donations left to the Foundation by generous individuals. None of our grants are funded by BMA member subscriptions.
